The Adelphi stands on the ground previously occupied by 3-storey The Adelphi Hotel. The Adelphi hotel was previously established in Raffles Place back in 1863. After the hotel expanded it shifted first to High Street then to the Coleman street currently occupied by The Adelphi. There was a dining hall that could sit up to 400, 100 bedrooms with attached bathrooms, tennis court, billiard room and reading room. The Adelphi was one of the 8 major hotels back in the 19th century. During the japanese occupation, it was renamed as Nanto Hotel. After serving for 110 years, The Adelphi Hotel held a farewell party on 25 june 1973 and was demolished in 1980.
