Keyword Graveyard

5/12/2013

There are many keywords that will literally send your campaigns to the graveyard and kill any chances of being profitable. How can you determine whether or not a keyword is doomed for
the graveyard? Let's look at an example.

If you type the keyword "Golf" into Google, you're going to find many advertisers whose campaigns are in the keyword graveyard. This is because they are advertising a deadly keyword that receives a ton of traffic but isn't relevant enough to produce sales at a high rate. Will this keyword earn you sales? Sure ,but you'll spend a whole lot more in advertising than you will earn ,so it's a losing cause no matter which way you look at it.

Spotting a deadly keyword like "Golf" is easy because there is only 1 word in the phrase. Any
keyword phrase that only has one or two words in the phrase are very good candidates to run
your campaigns into the ground . You should make it a rule of thumb to avoid one and two word keywords unless they are product-related

Many product and companies that you can promote have a name that is comprised of one or two words, for example: Squidoo. When it comes to product keywords the two word minimum phrase rule doesn't apply.

At this point we need some example of keywords that are considered campaign killers:

- Money
- Golf
- Spanish
- Dog

These are pretty obvious because single word keywords are so "broad" in nature that they are
never effective while promoting a product. To further emphasize this let's dig a little deeper and list a few more.

- Make money
- Golf swing
- Learn Spanish
- Dog training

You may be thinking to yourself that these keywords are very targeted to related products, but this is simply not the case. These are the kinds of words that you want to stay away from at all costs because they WILL NOT produce positive ROI.

These keywords leave too many unanswered questions and don't target a specific group of people. Two word deadly keywords are the hardest to detect, so don't use two word keywords unless you have supporting data that tells you otherwise. By digging a little deeper yet we can find some great keywords that will convert well for you :

- Make money online ebook
- Correct your golf slice
- Learn Spanish Videos
- Train my German Sheppard

Being relevant with your keyword choice can take a killer keyword and make it one of your
best converting, lowest cost traffic generators.
